Kensington Metropark, on the border of Oakland and Livingston counties, is one of the most popular destinations for Plymouth-area families over Memorial Day weekend. With Kent Lake, the beach, picnic areas, and trails opening for the season, the park draws huge crowds — and an increase in law enforcement contacts.
Boating Under the Influence on Kent Lake
Kent Lake is a no-wake lake popular for kayaking, paddleboarding, and small motorized vessels. BUI charges under MCL 324.80176 still apply: a BAC of .08 or higher, or operation under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail (180 days for a High BAC of .17 or above) and additional consequences for boating privileges.
Day-Use Citations
Kensington and other Huron-Clinton Metroparks have their own ordinances covering:
- Park hours and curfews,
- Alcohol consumption rules,
- Use of motorized vessels,
- Pet rules,
- Camping and trail use, and
- Glass and prohibited items at the beach.
Violations are typically issued by Metropark police as ordinance citations and adjudicated in the local district court.
Marijuana Use
Under MCL 333.27954, public marijuana consumption is prohibited everywhere in Michigan — including in Metroparks. First-offense civil infraction penalties are up to $100. Repeat offenses increase.
Where Your Case Goes
Kent Lake straddles Oakland and Livingston counties. The Oakland County portion goes to the 52-1 District Court in Novi. The Livingston County portion goes to the 53rd District Court in Brighton. The deciding factor is where in the park the offense occurred.
OWI on the Drive Home
Driving home from Kensington to Plymouth or Canton means I-96 east, then either I-275 south or M-14. Holiday weekend enforcement is heavy on these corridors. A first-offense OWI under MCL 257.625 carries up to 93 days in jail, fines, license sanctions, six points, and substance-abuse treatment.
What to Do After a Citation or Arrest
- Note the agency — Metropark police, Michigan State Police, or local police.
- Preserve photos, receipts, and witness information.
- Get a lawyer involved before your first court date.
- Do not post about the incident on social media.
